Licensing & Certification Roadmap

The credentials that make A Nice Yard legal, insurable, and competitive — who issues them, what they cost, and the steps to get them. Listed in recommended priority order for our work in New Mexico.

Fees and timelines are approximate; always confirm against the official organization before you apply.

NM Contractor License (CID)

Required to perform construction (driveways, dirt work, fixed-improvement landscaping, gate fabrication) above the casual-work threshold in New Mexico.

NM Regulation & Licensing Dept — Construction Industries Division Fees + PSI exam fees + ~$100-$300/yr for the $10,000 bond Renew: ~Every 3 years (verify)

NM Pesticide Applicator License

Legally required to apply pesticides or herbicides commercially for hire — including weed and brush control we advertise.

New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) ~$25 exam + ~$50 license Renew: Every 3 years (~$50); 4 CEUs per year

USDOT Number + NM Weight Distance (CDL Class A)

Federal/state registration for operating the Class A rig hauling debris and dumpsters. The owner already holds the Class A CDL.

OSHA 10 / 30-Hour Construction

Voluntary safety-awareness training frequently required by general contractors, public bids, and insurers. OSHA 10 for crew; OSHA 30 for supervisors.

First Aid / CPR / AED

Jobsite-expected emergency-response certification; cheap, fast, and good for liability and crew safety.

AWS Certified Welder (D1.1)

Performance credential that validates structural weld quality — markets the gate-fabrication line and pairs with the GS-24 contractor class.

ATSSA Flagger Certification

Work-zone traffic-control certification needed when driveway/right-of-way or municipal work touches public roads.

SIMA Advanced Snow Manager (ASM)

Entry-level snow & ice credential that builds credibility and helps with insurance for the snow-removal line.

EPA Construction General Permit (Stormwater)

Stormwater/erosion permit required when a job disturbs one acre or more. In New Mexico apply to EPA (not NMED).

EPA Lead RRP Certification

Required for paid work that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes or child-occupied facilities.

HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120)

Needed only if the company takes on hazardous-substance or contaminated-site cleanup. Routine junk/debris hauling does not trigger it.
