Federal/state registration for operating the Class A rig hauling debris and dumpsters. The owner already holds the Class A CDL.

Who needs it

Commercial vehicles operating interstate, or intrastate vehicles with GVWR/GCWR of 26,001 lbs or more — a Class A combination typically qualifies. A HAZMAT endorsement is only needed if hauling placarded material (routine debris/gravel does not).

Steps to get it

1 Confirm your rig GVWR/GCWR — at or above 26,001 lbs triggers the requirements.
2 Register for a USDOT number through FMCSA (free).
3 Register for the NM Weight Distance Tax permit with MVD.
4 Keep the MCS-150 updated every two years. Add a HAZMAT endorsement only if you ever haul placarded loads.
