Getting Your Commercial Learner Permit (CLP)
The CLP comes first; you must hold it before the skills test.
- Hold a regular driver license, meet the age and medical (DOT physical / medical certificate) requirements, and pass the General Knowledge test (plus Combination and Air Brakes for Class A).
- A CLP lets you practice-drive only with a qualified CDL holder seated beside you.
- You must hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test.
- A CLP holder may NOT carry passengers (except trainers/examiners) or haul hazardous materials.
