The guide

Central New Mexico soils are typically alkaline, clay-heavy and low in organic matter - test first, then build the soil with organic matter.

  • Test before you amend; our soils run alkaline (pH about 7.5-8.4) and low in organic matter.
  • Organic matter (compost, aged manure) is the master amendment - it improves clay structure, infiltration and biology.
  • Do not try to acidify the whole soil; pick high-pH-adapted plants and treat iron chlorosis with chelated iron.
  • Mulch the surface to conserve water and reduce crusting; avoid working clay when wet.
  • Do not add sand to clay - it can make structure worse.
